Whether you're looking to expand your fashion knowledge, or looking for inspiration to spice up your own wardrobe, this list of 10 popular summer trends in 2023 should help you stay 'in the know' for the season ahead.
1. METALLICS
Bikinis, mesh pieces, stacked jewellery and chrome sunglasses. In many shapes and forms, metallic is back in and one of the hottest fashion trends this season. With brands such as Diesel and SKIMS by Kim Kardashian producing some of the most viral metallic items; the iconic mirrored leather handbag (as seen on social media) and a range of 70s poolside glamour swimwear. This trend has something to offer for everyone, regardless of your personal style!
2. BELTS
Belts! Something that the fashion community has been experimenting with in both stereotypical and unconventional ways. From utilising statement belts, layering multiple together and using them in unorthodox places, such as around the bust or shoulder, belts have been known to add character to an outfit, and they have definitely been serving up to that use in recent fashion. Studded belts, chunky belts, disc/concho belts, wide belts, chain belts... everything that you could think of! It's all being served to the max. And we're not complaining!
3. BOOTS
No we're not talking about the blue monkey with red shoes, but more buckles, vintage leather and cowboy style... Boots, for years, have been seen as a winter staple, but now are collectively part of many a summer wardrobes, being paired with boxers, boy shorts and maxi skirts for a western-feminine-streetwear vibe. Cowboy boots, in particular, have taken the world by storm, with people sporting them in neutral colours or pops of colour (especially red or pink). This is one trend we love due to the versatility of it!
4. SHEER LACE
Sheer lace camis, dresses, skirts and more are making a highly saturated appearance this summer, with brands like Bella Venice, I.AM.GIA and Djerf Avenue creating some beautiful elevated basics with the fabric. Sheer lace has gained popularity due to its effortless elegance and flattering effect, with people dressing it up by pairing it with "girly" items, or dressing it down with athleisure and streetwear. It's a romantic, "blokette", "coquette" and even streetwear lovers' dream.
5. CAPRIS
You heard it! The style trend that reigned supreme in the 2000s is back and in full swing. Capri pants may be controversially popular, but the fashion community is loving them whole heartedly. Style them with some pointed kitten heels and an elevated top for a cute, chic look, or a baby tee and a pair of adidas sneakers for a more casual streetwear approach. Either way, capris are being loved across the world, and we love that for them.
6. JORTS
Jean/denim shorts, knee length. One of the most popular summer trends, if not the most popular trend of summer 2023! Jorts are a staple wardrobe essential and have taken over social media and the streetwear fashion community. The baggy fit is flattering and yet to mention, extremely comfortable, in comparison to once popular skinny jeans and ultra low-rise denim hot pants! So it's a yes from us! And the majority of Gen Z... Pair them with a baby tee, bikini top, or even an oversized tee for an even more relaxed fit.
7. HAIR ACCESSORIES
Over and leading up to this summer season, we've seen bows, bows and more bows. Whether they're made out of lace, ribbons, knitted or even pins and charms, they have been making countless appearances in hair. And we love it! Accessorising your hair is another way to add character to your outfit, accompanying or without jewellery, hair accessories can take it up another level. You could even try making some of your own hair accessories with materials and fabrics found at home. There's a summer activity!
8. UNCONVENTIONAL/UGLY SNEAKERS
An unexpected trending item is definitely what comes to mind when you think of unconventional/"ugly" looking trainers/sneakers. Retro looking athletic shoes from the 90s and 2000s, with unique designs and colourways, have captured the hearts of the vintage fashion community. The finer the line between "plain ugly" and fashion genius the better is the motto of this trend. Whether this will continue on into the next seasons we are yet to find out...
9. MAXI SKIRTS
A timeless staple for every wardrobe, which can transition from spring to summer, fall and winter; maxi skirts are super hot this season. Slinky, flowing variations, denim, lace or linen, the possibilities are near enough endless, with a multitude of fabrics and styles to choose from. So it is not hard to believe that maxi skirts are popular once again. In fact, did they ever really go out of style?
10. BALLET FLATS
Another rendition of the elegant, soft femininity look that is trending in fashion right now, is the re-emergence of ballet flats. With high-end brands such as Miu Miu, Steve Madden and Maison Margiela (with the iconic Tabi shoes) producing trending ballerina flat shoes (pictured above, from Pinterest). People have been styling them with long white socks, athleisure and sporty clothing, and paired with soft/dainty jewellery and accessories to bring back the feminine look.
